Biography

Rep. Ed Schieffer, of Troy, is seeking a third two-year term as the Eleventh District State Representative. Schieffer commented, "In this tough economy for Missouri, it is extremely important to keep an experienced, educated, hard working leader who uses common sense as a legislator."

Schieffer resides on an 80-acre family farm which was designated a "Century Farm". His family has continuously owned and operated the farm since 1895. Ed, and his wife, Maria, have two grown childred, Sam and Sarah.

Schieffer is the eldest son of Albert (Sonny) and Betty (Zalabak) Schieffer.

Schieffer graduated from Troy Buchanan High School in 1967. Schieffer graduated from Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State) in Kirksville. He earned a B.S. in secondary education majoring in speech, drama, English and minoring in political science in 1979. He earned a master's degree in secondary education at Sourthern Illinois University in Edwardsville. For nearly 30 years, Schieffer taught in public, rural, suburban and city schools. He also taught at St. Mary's Academy in O'Fallon. Besides teaching, Schieffer held licenses in life and health insurance, auctioneering and real estate.

Organizations for which Rep. Schieffer has been a member include: 4-H, F.F.A., speech and debate teams, Missouri State Teachers, National Education Association, Federation of Teachers, Missouri Historical Society, Missouri Archeological Society, Lincoln County Retired Teachers, Knights of Columbus Council 6525, St. Isadore's 4th Degree Knights, Chamber of Commerce of Troy and Moscow Mills, Eastern Lincoln County Economic Association, Missouri Realtors, Farm Bureau, Communication, Rural Legislative Caucus, Prolife Caucus, Labor Caucus, Tri-County Labor, life member of National Rifle Association, Missouri Democrats, and Lincoln County Democrats.

The Speaker of the House appointed Rep. Schieffer to the following committess: Transportation, Rural Development, Appropriations for Administration, Agriculture Policy, and the Joint Committee on Transportation Oversight.

As a legislator, Rep. Schieffer received awards. The St. Louis Business Journal gave him the "State Legislative Silver Plate Award for Leadership". Missouri Farm Bureau President Charles Kruse acknowledged that Schieffer was the only Democrat who sponsored a resoultion to not have a tax increase on farmers. He has received the endorseement in the past from Missouri Pro-life and also received an "A" rating from the NRA.

Schieffer worked to bring a four-lane overpass at Highway 61-U-Mette Roads in Moscow Mills. He supported the Keystone Pipeline through Lincoln County which created jobs.

Rep. Schieffer has sponsored and co-sponsored many bills in the past four years. Five bills became law and where signed by Governor Nixon. House Bill 683, which Schieffer sponsored, became the largest transportation omnibus bill to be passed in years.

Rep. Schieffer pledges to continue to improve infrastructure in Lincoln County which will lead to development of industrial, business and residential properties.
